In late May 2020 by online stationery and crafts company Minted disclosed that it had suffered a breach that compromised millions of consumers’ private information — including passwords. Consumers may find indications on their credit reports that their data is being sold illegally via the online black market, commonly called The Dark Web.
MoginRubin filed a class action complaint in federal court on behalf of affected consumers on June 11, 2020, alleging violations of the California Consumer Privacy Act. Because Minted failed to take “reasonable security measures” and did not properly encrypt personal information, hackers were able to access Minted’s database of customer information, stealing more than 70 million records of customers nationwide, according to the suit.
